Who and What:

Genesis Young Professionals– a group of under-40 individuals who are professionals in a myriad of areas and who many have moved back to the area after an going to college out of the area, have never left the area or have been imported from various parts of the country. Professions range from entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, administrative assistants, financial planners and sales reps to those in insurance, banking, higher education, health care and the media.

Members come from many geographic areas, including Rome, Utica, Herkimer, Sauquoit, New Hartford, Remsen and many towns and villages in Oneida and Herkimer counties.

"GYP" is a sub-committee of The Genesis Group, which is an organization that strives to improve the quality of life here in the Mohawk Valley.

Why:

The purpose of the group is to provide a social and professional atmosphere for young people to meet other young people – and in doing so, change their attitude about our area. Young people are introduced to a multitude of activities, charity events, destinations and fun events throughout the area that they might not have otherwise been exposed to. Supper clubs break off of the group where members patronize the latest and hottest restaurants. Volunteer groups form to do walks/runs, assemble aid kits for the American Red Cross or take part for day-of assistance on many favorite Mohawk Valley events.

Many long-term friendships have resulted from being part of the group and our members have enjoyed helping each other advance in their careers and watching each other go through major milestones in our lives. GYP really serves as a great springboard for young people to make a conscious decision to love where they live and start making it their own by taking advantage of the many many great things to do.

When:

The GYP database is just shy of 200 members and they meet on a bi-monthly basis.

Future plans for the group:

GYP has adopted co-chairs in a great geographic spread, including Rome and the Valley, where events are being held in hopes of growing membership in these key areas.

Our mini-seminars throughout the year will revolve around strong professional and personal development and our social events will continue to grow and to showcase great destinations and organizations in the Mohawk Valley.

And, of course, there's STRIVE, our Annual Young Professionals Conference held in the Fall.
